Does Your Technology Provide Your Business with a Strategic Advantage?

Most small and mid-size businesses depend on their information technology infrastructure for day-to-day operations. Many of these businesses have implemented local area networks complete with file sharing, printing, e-mail, shared appointment books and scheduling services. Shared database applications, contact management software, and customer relationship management tools continue to grow in popularity. Web sites, already plentiful, continue to become more sophisticated.

Given the investment in hardware, software, and services, and the day-to-day costs, most businesses fail to gain a strategic advantage. This failure is most accurately attributed to the inertia of how businesses first implement information technologies. Growing businesses identify a needed function or capability; they hire a technical staff member or consultant; they select a technology to provide the function; they spend time and money keeping the technology working.
